I was a band/orchestra geek in school and in the Montgomery County (Maryland) Symphonic Band.

The guitar has been so easy to play by ear, that I never put forth the effort to read music on it. I don't read music on the guitar, but I do on the piano, violin/mandolin, and bass. Chris recently bought a 1924 Loyd Loar signed mandolin that he reportedly paid $200K for. BTW, that's an $80K mandolin Chris is playing, built by Luthier Lynn Dudenbostel. Here's Chris Thile (pronounced Thee-Lee) playing the Bach E Major Prelude, and you can hear why it is kicking my behind. It's one of the most difficult Bach pieces for the violin, and I'm reading from the violin score. I've been working on Bach E Major Prelude for a while now, and it's kicking my butt. Those Bluegrass boys are extremely quick pickers! They seem to have a 200 bpm starting point, and only get faster from there. G, D, A, E tuning.same as a violin, same highest note and the same lowest note! I took a couple of years off the guitar to focus on the mandolin, and I played everything from Bach to Bluegrass.

I was already a violinist, and when I pickled it up for the first time, it was very familiar, hmmmm. I got into the mandolin by inheriting an early 70's MIJ F-style Kentucky mandolin, about fifteen years ago from my grandfather. It'll be another awesome tool in your box, to add some sparkle to the mix.

Anyway, it sounds great, Daniel, I'm anxious to hear it in a full mix with the other instruments in place (guitars, bass etc). I think it sounds Zeppeliny like in "Going to California", although it was a mandola (the mandolin equivalent to a viola). I like the tune you posted, Daniel, that's a pretty cool sounding mandolin. I love the sound of a mandolin and the mandola. I really like the mandolin, and I'm glad that it has the sound you are looking for. looks like a Gibson Thunderbird/Firebird. So today I wrote a little song, worked out the parts, and recorded a mandolin duet with both of my Breedlove mandolins using the CAD E350 microphone! Fortunately for me I found one in really good shape for reasonable money! They were a total sleeper, but unfortunately the sales were low so the company discontinued them. When I say these are some of the best condensor microphones made. The microphone is a relatively unknown American microphone. On these, the fingerboards are a little wider than most mandolins, making them a great crossover model for guitarists! I already had a Breedlove FF model (F style), and since I am very familiar with their neck carve, I wanted to stay with the brand.

I thought a smaller A style mandolin would get me close to that sound, and surprisingly this new one does! It's a Breedlove, American made in Oregon, Quartz OF Model. Well some dirt-bag thief robbed my studio years back, and my Fender mando was one of the things he stole (of many things). The A style mando is because I wanted a certain tone to record with because years ago I had a Fender electric mandolin (FM62E), that had an acoustic sound like a little music box, and I loved it for many of the songs I wrote. An essential resource for the improving picker.I've been hunting for two items specifically and one is an A style mandolin, and the other a CAD E350 mic.
